Mahindians UAE Clinch 16th Lovers’ Quarrel with Dominant 7-Wicket Win

May 2, 2026 | Sharjah

The iconic rivalry between Mahinda College and Richmond College came alive once again in the UAE, as Mahindians UAE secured a commanding seven-wicket victory over Richmondites UAE in the 16th edition of the Lovers’ Quarrel Big Match – UAE Chapter, held at the Eagles Cricket Ground in Sharjah.

Played under lights on Saturday evening, the annual encounter drew a lively crowd of old boys and supporters, proving that distance has done little to diminish one of Sri Lanka’s most celebrated school cricket rivalries.

With this result, the long-running contest remains perfectly balanced — 8 wins each after 16 matches.

Richmondites Post 132 After Early Struggles

Opting to bat first, Richmondites UAE, led by Irusha Krishuul, found it difficult to build momentum against a disciplined Mahindians bowling unit.

Dilan Mahadura top-scored with a composed 43 off 31 balls, holding the innings together, while Gihan Serasinghe added a quick 29 off 21 deliveries. However, regular wickets prevented Richmondites from forming strong partnerships, and they were eventually bowled out for 132 in 19.4 overs.

The Mahindians’ bowlers controlled the game from the outset. Kushan Madhusha delivered a standout spell of 2 for 21 in 4 overs, earning the Best Bowler award, while Thilina Sagara supported well with 1 for 11 in 3 overs.

Mahindians Cruise to Victory

Chasing 133, Mahindians UAE, captained by Kanishka Piumal, approached the target with confidence and clarity.

Piumal led from the front with an aggressive yet controlled 37 off 22 balls, setting the tone for the chase. Ravindu Hansika provided solid support with 29 off 24 deliveries, ensuring there were no major setbacks.

Despite losing three wickets, Mahindians comfortably reached 133 for 3 in 16.1 overs, sealing victory with nearly four overs to spare.

For Richmondites, skipper Irusha Krishuul impressed with the ball, taking 1 for 7 in 2 overs, while Gihan Serasinghe picked up 1 for 31.

A Rivalry Beyond Borders

Now in its 16th year in the UAE, the Lovers’ Quarrel continues to be a highlight of the Sri Lankan expatriate sporting calendar. More than just a cricket match, it represents tradition, pride, and the enduring bond between two historic schools.

For Mahindians UAE, this was a statement victory — clinical with the ball, composed with the bat, and sharp in the field.

And as always, beyond the competition, the match ended in true “Big Match” spirit — with rivalry on the field and camaraderie off it.
